ABOUT ME

My name is Peter Boots, also known as Bootsy. A passionate diver for over 45 years. Around 1978 I became fascinated by the documentaries of Jacques Cousteau and I knew right away, “I want to live this adventure too!” A year later I obtained my NOB 1* diving certification in the Netherlands.

The romance of the documentaries of “Cousteau” is not found in Dutch waters. In 1980 I left for Curaçao to spend 6 years in this tropical sea, apart from my work as a (chef) cook, especially to do a lot of diving. There I started almost immediately with an analog Sea & Sea amphibian camera for underwater pictures. Analog and quite primitive compared to the present.

By now I am very satisfied with my extensive underwater photography set. This consists of an Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark 2 in an Isotta underwater housing, several lenses and 2 Sea & Sea D2 flash units.

Because of the competition I have made with myself mainly and my ambition for perfectionism, I keep challenging and inspiring myself constantly. Photos I take mainly for myself and sometimes I like to swim rebelliously against the current. For a good underwater photo I strive for originality, bravura, contrast and if possible strong eye contact. My absolute preference is wide-angle photos. A photo that keeps you looking at it just a little bit longer. Achievements are silver and gold at the ONK ‘ZOET’ and various awards at photo competitions. My challenge is to make the most beautiful photo yet.

Since 2015 I am a regular columnist, writer and photographer of various dive travel stories in the monthly glossy ‘Diving’, which is an inspiring addition to my photography work. In it I can share my underwater photography adventures with readers in my own unique way.

After so many years of diving, there is nothing that can excite me more than uninhibitedly taking on the adventure of making beautiful underwater pictures!

Mijn naam is Peter Boots, ook wel bekend als Bootsy. Al ruim 45 jaar een gepassioneerd duiker. Rond 1978 gefascineerd geraakt door de documentaires van Jacques Cousteau en ik wist het gelijk: “Dit avontuur wil ik ook beleven!” Een jaar later behaalde ik in Nederland mijn NOB 1* duikbrevet.

De romantiek van de documentaires van ‘Cousteau’ is niet terug te vinden in de Nederlandse wateren. In 1980 ben ik vertrokken naar Curaçao om in deze tropische zee gedurende 6 jaar, buiten mijn werk als (chef-)kok, vooral veel te kunnen duiken. Daar ben ik vrijwel direct begonnen met een analoge Sea & Sea amfibie camera voor onderwaterfoto’s. Analoog en vrij primitief vergeleken met het heden.

Inmiddels ben ik zeer tevreden met mijn uitgebreide onderwaterfotografie set. Deze bestaat uit een Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark 2 in een Isotta onderwaterhuis, diverse lenzen en 2 Sea & Sea D2 flitsers.

Door de competitie die ik vooral met mijzelf ben aangegaan en mijn ambitie tot perfectionisme blijf ik mezelf voortdurend uitdagen en inspireren. Foto’s maak ik voornamelijk voor mezelf en zwem soms graag rebels tegen de stroom in. Voor een goede onderwaterfoto streef ik naar originaliteit, bravoure, contrast en indien mogelijk sterk oogcontact. Mijn absolute voorkeur gaat uit naar wide-angle foto’s. Een foto waar je net iets langer naar blijft kijken. Wapenfeiten zijn zilver en goud bij het ONK ‘ZOET’ en diverse prijzen bij fotowedstrijden. Mijn uitdaging is om de allermooiste foto nog te gaan maken.

Sinds 2015 ben ik vaste columnist, schrijver én fotograaf van diverse duikreisverhalen in de maandelijkse glossy ‘Duiken’, dat een inspirerende aanvulling is op mijn fotografie werk. Hierin kan ik op eigenzinnige wijze mijn onderwaterfotografie avonturen delen met de lezers.

Na zoveel duikjaren is er niets dat mij méér kan boeien dan onbevangen als een echte vrijbuiter het avontuur aan te gaan om een mooie onderwaterfoto te maken!
